Dhow history

Oman is famous for its unique dhow building and courageous pioneering. Being located at a cross roads connecting shipping routes from far away countries Oman has for centuries used the sea to its advantage. As far back as the 8th century, an Omani dhow reached Canton in China.

Trade, fishing, pearl diving and the countries central location made Oman a powerful political country. There are 12 different types of dhow made in Oman, some designed for transportation, some for carrying heavy loads and people, some for fishing and pearl diving. Each are unique in their design.

This explains Oman's beautiful Dhows. Using simple tools the traditional wooden boat is bound together with rope or nails and can last from 60-100 years. Dhows are still built to this day and Omani people take great pride in their strength and beauty. Main fishing ports of Oman are; Mutrah, Sohar, Musandam, Sur and Salalah.
